Gas safe register

If you have ever wanted proof that the person servicing your boiler is a legitimate gas engineer, then you will be pleased to know that there is already a system in place. You can cross-check if an engineer is a bona fide heating specialist through the Gas Safe Register. Every gas engineer must be registered and is given a card as proof, a gas safe engineer is the best type of engineer.

Originally, the gas registration body in the United Kingdom was known as CORGI and every engineer had to be CORGI registered. However, in 2009 this changed to the gas safe register. Furthermore, Northern Island and Guernsey also changed to this gas registration body the following year. By law, all gas engineers must be on the Gas Safe Register. The engineer’s details can be checked online or on the phone at any time by the customer.

All Able Group engineers that undertake any heating work will be qualified as a Gas Safe registered engineer. And we are happy for our customers to verify any of our engineers. The exception will be if works are being carried out on an oil boiler. Here the engineer will not have to be Gas Safe Registered. Instead OFTEC and the OFTEC register is the official governing body for engineers working on oil heaters.

Disconnections & installations
We can send a gas safe engineer to disconnect gas appliances such as gas cookers, tumble dryers and fires. Unfortunately, we do not repair gas appliances, however, we will install one that you have already purchased.
Powerflush
If more than one radiator is cold or faulty it could point towards you needing one thing: a powerflush. Powerflushing is one way of maintaining your central heating system, it is the method of cleaning up your radiator from any built-up rust and debris.

Gas leaks

With an emergency gas leak always get yourself out of harm’s way and call the national grid. We can only deal with a gas leak once your property has been switched off by the supplier.

However, there are a few things we advise you to do if you smell gas in your property, these are:

  • Leave the property, ensuring everyone including pets leaves the house.
  • Do not touch any light switches as you leave the property.
  • Call the National Grid on 0800 111 999.

When the National Grid arrives to turn off the gas at your property and it has been isolated, only then can we go to your property and check for the location of the leak and apply the appropriate repairs to the fault, if any are needed.

Once the gas is turned off, a Gas Safe engineer must carry out the checks.

This work will include checking:

  • The operating pressure and heat input of the appliance to make sure it is working correctly
  • Any flue or chimney connected to the appliance is working properly
  • The appliance is suitable for the location
  • The appliance is properly set up and gas is burning correctly
  • The appliance is correctly fitted and connected to the gas pipes
  • There is an adequate, permanent air supply so the gas can burn properly and cleanly
  • All safety devices are operating correctly
  • All accessible gas pipework is in good condition
  • Gas pipework will be tested for any leaks
